I was just watching Real Time w/ Bill Maher, and it reminded me of an issue that I've often considered, and has a bit more recently hit home -- and what I am referring to the often hypocritic struggle that many devout christians have with the whole us vs them/believers vs non believers idea and trying to reconcile it with modern PC ideas ( Read more... )

someone told me that basically god is like light and the devil is like dark so they cant exist in the same place. it's impossible. and believers are also like light whereas nonbelievers are like dark, so they cant exist in the same place as god (heaven). and god wants people to be with him but it is just impossible for people to be with him if they don't believe. so basically if you dont believe, you are just going against what god wants, which im guessing they think is bad. but i dont think they think we're bad people. they just feel sorry for us and think we dont know any better or that something happened to us in our life that made us not believe. it's not like we purposely want to defy "god."

Maybe its just me being reactionary, but when I think about it, I get just a little bit offended by the notion that people "feel sorry for" me for not believing... especially given the fact that I believe that religion is based infinitely more on cultural upbringing than on actual spiritual truth. Its like someone saying they are "superior" or "right" because they eat with a fork instead of chopsticks.
