Ruminations on the dreaded PE classes in school.

Ok. Everybody knows I work out 4-6 times a week now. And I love it. But I've been pondering something. When I was in school I hated Phys ed. It was the worst class of all. And I have to pin it on lazy gym teachers. PE was always about team sports or brutal calisthenics (sp?). It was horrible. I hate participating in team sports, unless it's ( Read more... )

I couldn't stand exercise until I figured out that I liked walking outside. Now I go for a walk everyday - either the 3.2 mile loop around a lake (sorta flat but longer) or a 2.8 mile loop at a state park (more hilly but shorter).

I hated exercise until it became peaceful me-time to just walk around and enjoy nature. Now it's rejuvenating and I get cranky when I have to go without it. And I like doing it in all kinds of weather, even cold and/or drizzle (as long as it's not pouring cats and dogs), because I enjoy feeling the change of the seasons.

Right. And it's that whole "me-time" thing that makes it so great. Walking's great. I do that on days I can't get to the gym. I remember when you first started running. I was really proud because you were doing it all the time and making exercise a habit. I'm glad you're still keeping up with physical activity. I guess it is a habit.

I hope it gets easier for him. I so hope he has better teachers than I do. You're a good mom to keep an eye on classes out of the textbook curriculum too.

You can be my gym teacher if I can stare at your bod while you're screaming at me. But you have to wear tight-fitting clothes, ok?

No, not too random. Random is what I am about to become when I go over to my grandparents' for Friday happy hour in a little bit. I was watching your journal while you moved, and I hope you guys are settled in now (I'm bad about not checking my Friends page every day). Actually, how far are you guys from any sort of caverns? Mike and I want to see caverns and I remember there were some in Virginia. We would love to see you guys, too. Give Stef my love.

You've hit the nail on the head as to why I hated PE as well, but you forgot the dreaded "cream the pudgy kid" er I mean dodgeball. That one game is the reason I assume all PE teachers are sadists of the twisted, fucked-up, evil variety.*

*Sadists of the fun-spanky variety are ok.

You are correct. They are sadists of the *more* twisted, fucked-up, evil variety. Fortunately, we never played dogeball much after 4th grade, so I got a respite after that.

You're lucky. In middle school they changed the name to "battle ball" and it got even more brutal.
