Tour, Day 4

Oct 01, 2011 18:37

Spoke yesterday with my Driver for the Tennessee to Virginia leg of the tour, and since I'd not found things in Knoxville or Asheville, he recommended we take the Northerly Route to Salem, VA, which will take us through Lexington, KY, and there's a bunch of places HE knows to play, there. This is excellent news, as I get to play for ratus, who I've not ( Read more... )

Oddly enough, I've known that song (under the names "Cruel War" and "No, My Love, No") pretty much forever; I think it's from the (American) Revolutionary War era. At one point I knew quite a few songs from the point of view of a woman who pretends to be a man or boy in order to join a military unit - "The Little Drummer Girl" ("With my fine cap and feathers, my fingers long and small,/ I played upon the rum-pi-ti-tum the best of them all...") is the only other one I can remember at the moment, although there was also one about a cabin "boy" on a ship.

It was great talking to you on Saturday afternoon, and I'm looking forward with great hope for next year's festivities - we'll make it work yet! (I haven't written that email yet, but I will in a few minutes.)

Sleep warm!

I know "Female Drummer", but rarely perform it (something about a guy singing the line, "When a young girl fell in love with me, and found that I was a maid," doesn't work quite in a baritone.

My own vocal range is somewhere between "second alto" and "female baritone" (let's put it this way: Willie Nelson can sing higher than I can), and that doesn't work terribly well on "Cruel War", or any other song meant to be sung by a sweet young girl. I'm no musician, just somebody who has always liked to sing... but when we finally do meet in person, it will be interesting to see if we have any songs in common, and if so, which ones... ;-)

So far, so good. I had really wanted to play for folks in NJ, but it WAS last-munite efforts - the next tour (I keep saying this, maybe I can make it happen) will be planned at least six months in advance.

I know it's not tremendously near you, Jerry, but I will be in Silver Spring, MD on the 24th of October, if you're interested...

That's a day trip just to get there by bus or train, so, it just wouldn't be practical for me.

If you ever play Philadelphia, would love to see you perform!

Sorry we couldn't get it together this time. The music director at MUF did seem hopeful about doing something with a 6 month heads up, so keep that in mind. Love you, sorry not going to see you this trip.

I also know this song as "The Cruel War".

Take care and have a terrific tour.

Next time, dear. Sorry it was so haphazard; I really DO need an agent.
Thank you for your efforts; they're appreciated beyond my capacity for words.
Lovin' you.

Sorry things didn't work out for Coronation Saturday...we're not really connected with the coffeehouse "scene" around here. The baronial folk will usually come through on this sort of thing though, especially on short notice.

And thanks for the signal boost. ;)
