Professor gaffetheorist:

We were going through the files of $JOURNAL and discovered a manuscript that you submitted a year and a half ago. The file had been marked complete but no referee's report was included; we believe this is because the referee died.

Did you still want this paper published?

No idea... I can only think of a few people who might have been tapped for the paper in question, and I havent heard of any of them dying recently.

We *believe* this is because the referee died. Are they just being polite and not accusing your paper of doing the deed? Maybe he's not dead, just missing. Or possibly, if you take long enough refereeing a paper they'll assume you died?

The possibilities are endlessly entertaining, at least to me. Maybe I need to get out more.
