On the scene in San Diego

After nearly three weeks in Southern Ontario, I've flown down to San Diego for totaldomination's wedding. My initial impression: totaldomination is a filthy, filthy liar, in that everything he's told me about weather in this part of the world is being disproved this week. Walkable? Southern California? I fear that you've been living under a misapprehension. Pasadena is walkable, barely, and so is Berkeley, but as far as I can tell that's it: every other city in SoCal is spread out as far as humanely possible.

I wouldn't have thought of Berkeley as being in SoCal.

The interesting thing about the sprawl here compared to, say, the Midwest is that the San Diego sprawl seems to be entirely organic; my guide was pointing out to me earlier today that the freeway on-ramps don't match with the off-ramps, because people just put ramps where they seemed convenient at the time. By contrast, sprawl in other places is planned sprawl; it's awful and unwalkable by design, rather than just sort of growing up that way.
