I am so glad that you ended up posting this story, even if you feel it isn't quite what you want it to be.
I could absolutely see the influence of "The Sparrow" in this one. The cultural differences, aliens that REALLY feel alien, the isolation... And that whole scene where Tar'a asks Malcolm, and what that ends up actually being. Shit.
And from my own experiences in other countries: the desire, no matter how well one is adjusting, to occasionally be able to relax into the familiar. You can be fluent in the local language, and have a wide circle of local friends, but sometimes it's just fun to sit down with someone from your home country and talk and laugh. I can understand Malcolm and Matt's need simply to be near another human sometimes, to touch.
And then coming home, and that's not right, either.
I'm so glad you were able to read the attachment! I sent it to a Mac friend of mine who never got back to me, so I'm so pleased you were able to NOT lose all that writing.
