Was there also a time traveling element involved? Are you SURE it was an American teenager? I have a foggy memory of a YA text that had to do with teenagers from the UK (Although one might have been American) who travelled either back in time to Venice or to a sort of alternative universe venice. I think the one I read was actually part of a series so perhaps I read further along the series than you....

If by chance we are remembering the same book (although possibly not - according to Amazon all the characters from the "real world" are Londoners and they travel to a Venice-like alternative universe) the series is Mary Hoffman's Stravaganza series. There are currently three it looks like, and all the titles start with "City of..." (I read City of Flowers)

No, there was definitely no time travel involved. It all happened in the present. But that sounds like a fascinating series.

I remember the same book, but not it's title. I do remember that it was very good, though. You should write Tomato Nation.
