I'm gonna skin some kittens....

Sep 14, 2009 18:19

They are refusing to use the litter box and are pooping all over my floor. First it was the living room, and now they have moved over to pooping in my bedroom too. *grumbles*

Mamacat and kittens are locked away in the bathroom until I can get some stuff to try and litter box train the babes.

Any suggestions? I'm really sick of picking up poop.

Move the box to wherever they live and the next time one poops on the floor, put the kitten and the poop in the box. You'll also need to get some of the enzymatic cleaner to make sure you get up the smell off the floor. Don't forget to look for urine spots (it'll show up under a black light, btw) and clean those with the same thing. They'll go where it smells like someone's gone before.

Have tried that, they then poop around the box or find a new spot to poop in. I have tried everything I can think of. Have locked them away in bathroom with a clean litter box and ammonia, have cleaned the areas with white vinager and a vet bought carpet cleaner, have put them several times in the litter box with their poop and simulated scratching, but nothing seems to be taking. I'm at wits end with this lot and want them out of my house.

Vinegar won't do any good. What are you using the ammonia for? What kind of litter are you using? Maybe they don't like it. You know that wonderful "green" litter? I've never had a cat who would use it. They want Tidy Cat. Nothing else will do. I've had some who'd, grudgingly, use the flushable litter, but they don't *like* it. Others would show their disdain by going right next to the box.

See if you can find a cleaner called PetZyme. I think Pets' Mart carries it.

The vinegar and ammonia was from the suggestion of amazonx who heard it on a radio show. The vinegar is suppose to smell bad to them so they avoid that area, and the ammonia in the litter is suppose to help promote them to use that area. Right now, I have two different kinds of litter, clumping and non-clumping. They were using the non-clumping litter for a little bit, but have gone back to pooping on my carpets.

Petsmart is in Joplin which is at least a 30-40 min drive from here, and I don't have much time to make it over there.

How well litter box traied is mama?
Is she using the box provided? In theory- she'll train the kittens.

Otherwise- puppy pads in their bedding, and confining them to a single room (with an easy to clean floor) a clean litter box, their food/water and a few toys. Only take them out when interacting with them or they are supervised.

Last but not least- move all poop into the litter box, uncovered. Place the kittens in the box - instinct should kick in and they should start to scratch it over.

In the meantime- Nature's Miricle is a good enzamatic for taking out the smell.

That's all I know.

Good luck-

Mama is fairly well trained. She has been known to poop on the floors of my client's house, but up until recently, she hasn't been doing it here. I tried moving the poop to the litter box and putting the kittens in. They seem to show no interest in covering it. If I put them in the bathroom (which is the easiest room to confine them in and clean the floors) mamacat tries to tear down my door to get out, and will constantly meow if she is outside and the kittens are inside. I don't know what else to do.

Also, make sure their box isn't too close to their food. Houdini when he was little bitty thing, would poop on the guest bed instead of the litter box because he didn't like his food too close to his poop. (smart cat, he is)

When Houdini was peeing all over the place the vet told me also to put boxes where he was going. If he went in the box, then to move it closer to where you want him to be, about an inch a week or so. The kittens might also not like their litter, which was Houdini's main problem. He hates crystals with a passion and won't use them.

Good luck.

Until I tried confining them to the bathroom, the litter boxes and food were in two different rooms, so that wasn't the initial problem. In fact, one of the places they are going is in my bedroom where the main food and water bowl is.

Tried putting the litter box in the main place they were going, they pooped around the litter box instead of in it. Also have tried changing their litter in a small litter box to non-clumping litter, which is what is in the main two litter boxes. Still am finding poop everywhere.
