Why are people so mean and more so recently?
I have an lj account, which I don't use as often as I should or know as much about as I would like too because two people who will remain nameless - because neither of them has an lj account which is suspect because they nagged me into mine - thought I should have one because I was reading fic and leaving signed feedback was the polite thing to do.
I agree with that part, so I have left some feedback without spending a lot of time at various communities - reading takes so much time especially when I have to read something more than once if I'm even going to try to leave intelligent feedback vs sqeeing. There is nothing wrong with that but I've had authors indicate that they would be extra delighted with considered feedback.
There is a point to the ramble really :o)
Recently I've seen more and more people comment on how their work - general posts and or fic - has been attacked. Many of these individuals have made their journals friends only because they are no longer willing or able to deal with unprovoked nastiness. And I say unprovoked because no matter what they wrote or didn't write in their journals no one forced the reader and bearer of nasty to read it. Having made a choice to read - past warnings, cuts, etc - there is absolutely no excuse for attacking the author. If it is the worst story ever written by someone without talent or skill there is always something constructive that can be said if the reader must say something.
I would like to blame the increased incidents especially in the Stargate communities on the stress of having another show canceled, bad advance for the next show, and TBTB being caught in poorly considered word choices and or lying, but since we are all supposed to be adults - no can do.
Everyone who attacks someone else over skill, talent, behavior, canon or whatever should be absolutely ashamed of themselves.
I loathe sanctimoniousness - my own included - the world is an ugly enough place without adding to it unnecessarily.
Think about why and then stop the insanity.
