You know, I've been raised Catholic all my life. I went to Sunday school, got baptized/communionized/confirmed, and I even went to Catholic school.

I can answer a few of these questions if you like.

Of course, the answers don't make any fucking sense either...

Yeah I know, like when I once asked a priest why women can't be priests he said "because that's the rule. That's tradition."

Oh Ok, glad we cleared that up.

See that one has a much better explanation though. It would be nice if at least the priests knew the background behind their racist/sexist stances on things.

Jesus' Apostles were all men. Priests are supposed to be on a mission from God, and since Jesus only gave missions to men, that became tradition.

Also, you couldn't convince anyone 2000 years ago that a woman should be in any role of importance.

Of course, if you read the bible, Jesus wakes from the dead and the first person who sees him is a woman and he sends her on a mission to tell others what she's seen - which sounds a lot like a mission from God to me...

women were also the only characters in the bible never to deny Jesus, like, say his favorite apostle Peter. Women were present in all key moments of the bible, such as being at the foot of his cross when he died. And since you recognize that not giving "missions" to women is outdated by a few thousand years, why can't the church?

I imagine "because" might be a response.

"Take these Marshmallow Peeps and break them. These are a symbol of my bone marrow, which I have given up for you."

"Take these eggs and break them. For to make an omelette, one must break a few eggs."

Actually, the bunny makes sense. As Eddie Izzard pointed out, clearly rabbits were on the hill where Jesus was crucified. And the cross was dark brown - just like chocolate...

Xmas is the celebration of when Santa Claus killed all the snakes in Ireland - right?

I'd make the suggestion that bunnies and chicks and such come from pagan beliefs (as is mentioned in the same Eddie Izzard routine referenced above), but that obviously can't be so. Easter is a purely Christian celebration of Christ's resurrection and thereby our redemption. There's nothing pagan about it. NOTHING.

Now let me go check the lunar cycles so I can determine when we'll be celebrating Easter next year.

I hear you guys had a good Easter, aside from praying for the pagan heathens. Well, you are obviously pissed. And sadly lots of other people are too. I read some stuff that may answer a couple of the questions you have as to why the clergy of the Catholic Church does what it does. Women aren't allowed to be priests because at the altar they are supposed to be representing Jesus as accurately as possible- reliving the last supper. Jesus was a man, so they feel the best people to do this are men. Another thing JPII said a lot was that women should hold Mary as their model, as humbly seeking to serve God and asking for no honors or rewards ( ... )

Josh,

saying Priests are "not the Catholic church" is like saying waitresses are not the restaurant.

I want to open a restaurant where only women can be the waitresses simply because a woman opened the restaurant. Then I will have my waitresses tell customers to go fuck themselves and tell them to eat whatever food I give them with out question, whether they ordered it or not. Man, that'd be an awesome restaurant.

I understand where you are coming from, I do. And yeah I was angry but I also know that what that priest is not reflective of every priest in the Church. I mean, looking at extreme Islam- they thrive on praying for our heathen souls, right? So it's not like I'm just blaming the Church on this one.

And when anyone acts like an asshole, it's great livejournal fodder.

By the way Timmy loves pilates and swears by them and says he wants all of his room mates do to pilates together.
