Why: According to him, he's awesome enough to do that.
[Somewhere by the school gate, you'll see... a mini Gilbert eating a bag of chips? He's dressed up in a Teutonic Knight uniform for some reason and is holding a wooden sword in one hand. You'll also notice a hamster cage by his feet. He eats the chips for a few minutes, and after that crumples up the bag and tosses it to the ground. He holds up his wooden sword into the air and clears his throat.]
A-hem! Behold, I have the hamster! If you want him back safe and sound, then bow down to the awesome me! Yeah, that's right! Kneel before me! Praise me! Give me praise!
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA....!
[He's not really sure whose hamster this is to begin with to tell you the truth, but who cares? He's Gilbert! And no one can stop the awesome Gilbert!]
