My experiences with fantasy type games is that you earn money [and each game has their own kind of money...] by completing quests and when you kill random creatures. You can also sell items you've purchased.
On your travels, it's just creatures that may or may not attack [they tend to have different levels of aggression]. But I'm sure you could write in a few bandits?
Oh...Oh god...*gamer instincts rising* d-depends on what game, but usually you buy items that can help you with your quest--if it's a world based on monetary stuff, then you use gold; if stonework, then coins of varying value (ruby, emerald, sapphire...think that's how it goes), and. Yeah. You can buy armor that grants special bonuses to defense (+1 against fire attacks if you're going against a dragon or fiery creature), weapons with enchantments (the sword has an enhancement bonus of +1 and grants you a +1 on all of your attacks against an enemy, and is enchanted with a flame that grants an extra 1d6 of damage), maps, healing potions, clues, spell scrolls, trail rations--*reigns self in*
