Making the switch to LINUX

Apr 28, 2011 08:51

OK, I'm finally making the switch to LINUX.  Anyone have any suggestions, esp. for good apps (like a substitute for iTunes)?

I've heard that Banshee is a commonly used replacement, and I've heard that you can install many windows programs on Linux, so iTunes itself might be fine.

Here's a handy chart for when you have computer troubles.

Which flavor are you choosing? I'm not a Linux guy but I'm curious because eventually I will tire of living in the Garden of Steve, and Linux will be my refuge then.

BTW, Graham is a good person to talk to about linux. It's his primary OS these days.

I'm getting Ubuntu for its reputed ease of use.

Yeah, that's what I hear also. Let us know how it goes.

Why make the switch?

I can't stand to pay Microsoft for an operating system, and it's becoming a drag to get around the payment part, and LINUX being open source is the righteous option. I have a friend in town who is upgrading my computer with his hand-me-down parts, so it's a good time to switch now.

Ah, OK. I was wondering why Apple wasn't an option, but your reasons preclude it as well. Mac stuff is at least built on Unix and partly open source, but it ain't cheap.
