I can't stand to pay Microsoft for an operating system, and it's becoming a drag to get around the payment part, and LINUX being open source is the righteous option. I have a friend in town who is upgrading my computer with his hand-me-down parts, so it's a good time to switch now.

Ah, OK. I was wondering why Apple wasn't an option, but your reasons preclude it as well. Mac stuff is at least built on Unix and partly open source, but it ain't cheap.
