Hitting is one thing I will never condone, but this shouldn't restrict those in prone positions such as parents or teachers from stuff like restraining a violent person/child through whatever means deemed necessary in order to prevent harm to oneself or another person/child.

There is a vast difference between restraining a violent child and restraining a violent adult; in the case of a child there are many alternatives than fighting fire with fire because children generally are behaving this way as a result of extreme trauma combined with little impulse control (generally also caused by trauma) and this can be worked with. Adults in the same space are not so easily reasoned with or managed and sometimes the decision must be made regarding the best interests of all concerned.

Having said that, this diagram is actually about obedience and hitting a child in order to make them obey simply because they are child and the one demanding obedience is an adult. It's a diagram that shows the dynamics of force over those smaller and weaker than the adult and how most adults choose to rationalise the use of that force by calling it discipline: whatever color you wish to try and paint it there is absolutely no philosophical difference here between the use of force to dominate small children into compliance and the ( ... )
