The author is the kid's book in question is Lane Smith.
You might like Dill Faulkes, the donor of the Trinity Bells. He has an asteroid named after him, for one thing. I am pleased by the straightforward wording of his wikipedia entry, which includes the statement "...made a lot of money..."
