I love all your LotS Undressing posts. It's nice that you're taking the time to analyze their costumes, because I find the costumes on the show to be fascinating. I'm glad other people are appreciating them :)
And man, that Mord-Sith costume is crazy-complicated, but really beautiful at the same time. For the actors' sake, I hope there was like a secret hidden zipper in there somewhere ;) Now I'm curious how the weather was when they shot this, because wearing this costume probably wouldn't have been pleasant in the summer.
Yeah the costumes are all really great, and doing these posts always makes me go "Wow!" at the complexity when I figure out how they're put together.
Have you heard the interview with Bridget discussing this costume? If I remember correctly it took a bunch of powder and two people to get her in the costume. XD Not to mention being unable to sit at all. I'm pretty sure it was summer when they filmed the Mord-Sith stuff. I guess the torture of having to be in that outfit adds to characterization with wanting to slap people around some! XD
The costume department has done a great job overall, but I think this is the masterpiece of the show so far. It's like everything they do that's good, exemplified: taking a fantasy costume cliche and making it realistic by adding detail and complexity, coupled with a sleekness that reads as modern and attractive. There's something totally stylish about this costume. I can see that under-bust corset for example being a hit on the fashionista blogosphere.
Great job dissecting it; I've never noticed all that crazy lacing before!
I was watching the last episode and I really enjoyed the villagers' costumes in it. Someone is sourcing really great prints over there. I like how they're taking Polynesian-style prints and using them for "Western fantasy" clothes. It gives it a great look that's new and familiar at the same time.
This really is such a fantastic costume. And you're right that they made this realistic and sexy in a way that doesn't come off as cliche. I remember the book version had a yellow emblem on the front, and I'm glad they left that off, because I just can't see that meshing with the overall design they went with.
Doing these posts has given me an even greater since of awe at the craftsmanship of the costumes in this show. There is so much you don't take in until you just really study a picture.
hollywoodgrrl pointed out that the last Mord'Sith's outfit (ep 1x18) looked like it was made of pleather or something, hee! Maybe they've changed to a faux leather to make it easier for the less-important Mord'Sith actresses to go about the whole affair? :P Would be a pity if that was the case, because it's an insanely awesome outfit! Did you hear Bridget's audio interview about how she had to be transported to set lying on the backseat of the vehicle because she couldn't sit in the outfit!? Hardcore!
I've started wondering about how many Mord-Sith outfits they made and the variations in them. Denna's and Kahlan's look to be the same (same outfit maybe? with the lacing it makes it a possibility.), but the chick's in 1x18 looked to be different (as you pointed out) and even the chick who accompanied Denna to Capture Richard looked as if her corset was a little different.
Yeah, I heard that interview. XD I guess all you really have to do to defeat a Mord-Sith is knock them over. And then they can be like a turtle on their back! XD Reminds me of the commentaries for the first X-Men movie. They had a similar problem in there leather outfits and were unable to jump over a little two foot wall for one of the scenes until the outfits were broken in more.
There is also a possibility of two more different Mord Sith costumes, though they aren't shown clearly. If you watch at the very end of ep 8 ('Denna'), when Constance bends over Denna to give her the breath of life, there are two woman standing in the background. One looks to be wearing white (the possible white Sith uniform of the books) and another wearing red, with her chest is exposed a bit. I dunno if they are indeed Mord Sith, but there ya go. :)
Yeah, I noticed those ones, and that white one does appear to be the show version of the white book outfit. Like you said though, they're not shown clear enough to get much detail on. I'd love to see a scene at the Peoples Palace with all these different Mord-Sith outfit variations. Will wish we get something in the finale! ^_^
