Are Fangirl(boys)/Shippers REAL fans?

Apr 22, 2010 14:53

Last week, I posed the question, Should the Eleventh Doctor be Sad About the Loss of Rose? and some people made some wonderful points, and reminded me that we shippers aren't actually all that crazy. But here is the newest craze on the Forums I wish to bring to you.

Earlier in the week, a Dear Deidre letter (from the Sun) was singled out for being ( Read more... )

The extremists of any demographic are the ones who get into the news, and create mainstream impressions and, utlimately, stereotypes.

Um... i guess, first off, what do you mean by fangirl or fanboy? i never even heard of this term that i can recall until about a month ago. Is this meant to be directed towards fans of a show, or individual, or genre, or what? i'm a wee bit confused ( ... )

Well, firstly, fangirl or boy. Well, I would consider myself to be quite the DT fangirl. I adore the man to pieces lol. I even travelled up to Stratford when he was doing Shakespeare to see him lol. Didn't meet him though :(

The Sim's thing, I've done that. I made the Doctor and Rose LMFAO - I was bored, it was fun. They had an alien child and EVERYTHING.

I understand what you mean about the DT obsession, it's the biggest obsession I've had since my Angel (BtVS/Angel) crush when I was in my teens. I consider myself to be a pretty altogether woman with a kid and another on the way and I day dream about DT lol

I do believe that being a shipper is sepprate from being a fan, but, in my opinion, most, and when I say most I mean around maybe 80%, of shippers are fans first.
You can really like an actor or parring, and still love the show.

I can say, proudly with my chin held high, that I am both a FAN and a shipper for not only doctor who, but other shows as well.

Unfortunately, the name shipper has been slandered in the past few years by people which I refer to as the "fangirls".
These people are obsessive, violent, and Loud.
Proof: Look at Twilight fans....

Actually, you are 100% right, the Twilight lot are probably the worse I've ever seen. A cautionary tale if there ever was one.

Oh this is even an older question than this sad to say. WAY back in the Stone Age of the late 80s, early 90s I was a devoted and active member of the Beauty and the Beast fandom, the TV one. When it was cancelled we were all, of course crushed, then they announced it would be brought back, but without Catherine. Instead there would be another female lead...gasp. Instant Fandom Civil War. There is actually a portion of the fandom that refuses to acknowledge that Season 3 ever happened ( ... )

Hmm, you bring up a really interesting point. The question is whether one is a fan of the actor/actress or the show, or of how the show was. i never was an avid shipper on CSI, but i liked Catherine and didn't like Sara... which is funny, because i liked Jorja on the West Wing. But that isn't why i liked the show, or lost interest. And i kept watching BSG even when i was pissed about what happened with Apollo and Starbuck. Whereas, on Voyager, i was a fan of the show for multiple reasons, and kept watching it until the end, but i still think that it was the handling of the Janeway/Chakotay --> Chakotay/Seven that heralded the show jumping the shark (no, it wasn't the entire reason, but they happened at the same time... it was like TPTB were saying "screw you, you're going to get more Seven sexin's and like it ( ... )

You want to see a fandom with crazy fans, go look up the horrid things some Twilight fans do to those who aren't ( ... )
