I know, it really is a mystery. I've not known Billie Piper make many comments on his departure, but I know Barrowman preferred the atmosphere when Tennant took over as leading man. He said so much in his autobiography.

Perhaps it just wasn't the right job for CE - we've all be in situations when it just wasn't right.

I was just gonna say the same thing! So he left because he... didn't fit in? The atmosphere was... Too strict? Too relaxed? Too humid ( : p )? He really isn't saying much at all, and it took him five years to say it? I could understand if it took him years to say something genuinely back about the cast/crew, but not this vague, almost entirely pointless comment.
