My schnoodle pup, Rosie, is finally starting to be her old self again. She has been so sick for about a month. It took them almost 2 weeks to finally diagnose that she had something called Puppy Strangles. It's a bizarre immune reaction. Fortunately, they say that once cleared up, it doesn't come back. It is so good to see her bright eyed and ( Read more... )

Is Strangles like people have gout or something? I've never heard of that before.

Rosie seems like she'd be allot of fun to have in a home.

Strangles isn't like anything I've ever heard of. Her whole neck swelled up and around her eyes. The vet took a biopsy of the tissue in her neck and said that it was spongy...full of tube like channels of pus, like an abscess ( ... )

I'm SO glad to hear that she's home and improving, Mary. Even with massive vet bills I'd still do the same thing over and over.

They are family. Even though for the first month I had her I was ready to give her back, by the time she got sick at 8 months...the vet gave me estimates of cost before each round we went with her and all I could say was 'I don't care, FIX IT!' I'm sure my ex thinks I'm insane. I had a 10 yr old cockapoo before Pippin (the black and white with me in my icon) who got sick and they recommended putting him down, since he was "elderly". I told them that 10 was not elderly for a 15 lb dog and really fought for him...to the point of surgery. It was a fast moving cancer of the blood vessels and they put him to sleep at the end of the surgery. From the first symptoms until death was only 2 weeks:( I almost fainted when they told me that Pippin (then 4 months old) had a leaky heart valve....they sent me to the Mich State vet school to see the cardiac specialist. He just confirmed it and sent me home $300 later. He hasn't been sick or anything in his 9 years so far. Another vet...a friend...told me that on a scale of 1-10, his leak was a 2 and ( ... )

How well I understand all you say here, Mary. I went through all of the above in one version or another and would do it all again. People who don't know what four-footed friends can mean don't get it.
But we do, don't we?
They just give so much and even though they're mayhem in person (dog?) we still love them.
I'm glad Rosie is getting better.
:)

Such good news! =) It's funny how we get happy about destruction and chaos after a health scare! lol I yell at them when they mess up, but heaven forbid I one day get home and my pets have done nothing of the sort. I'd panic!

Isn't that crazy? They're family, for sure. For the first month I had Rosie, I was ready to give her back. 8 months later, I spend $2000+ on her frantically. There were two times I was sure she wouldn't last another day. The second time she couldn't even stand up without falling down. She looked like she'd had a stroke. I got her to the vet at 3:30pm and she walked around like nothing was wrong! She has been good ever since and I am grateful. I think the vet thought I was loosing it...I tried to tell them that she couldn't even get her feet under her without plowing her nose into the floor and wouldn't eat or drink unless I brought her broth or fed her turkey or boiled hamburger. Oy!
