Suggestions for digital audio workstation software?

I'm trying to follow up on a long-time interest in music composition and mixing, so I started looking into DAW software. As so often happens when I look at new areas, I'm overwhelmed by dozens of choices, ranging from less than $100 to $10,000+, with even the product descriptions assuming a level of knowledge about what exactly I'd want to do that

This sounds like Garageband to me, and I assume there's a PC equivalent.
