Status Report Supernatural Reviews & Other Stuff

Hi, flist! Some of you may wonder about the lack of activity around here lately, and I thought I should probably let you know that I no longer intend to write any Supernatural reviews. In fact, I have quit watching the show altogether after The Purge, and there is little chance that I will return to the show (or the fandom) in the future. It is no ( Read more... )

I will really miss your episode reviews, they always made me think and re-think which was a very good thing. I completely understand your issues with show, so stopping spending the time and energy to watch and review makes a lot of sense. Thanks for all the great writing!

Thank you! :) I am glad you enjoyed my reviews so much. Knowing that other fans still read and enjoy my reviews was a great writing motivation these past two seasons. But yeah, I really think it makes little sense to spend so much time and energy on a show I no longer enjoy. :(

Thank YOU for reading! :) Knowing that other fans still read and enjoy my reviews was a major motivator to keep going these past two seasons.

Hi! Glad to hear from you again even if it's to say goodbye! I've actually stopped watching season 9 at around the same time you stopped, and it's been a while since I've really felt connected to these characters. I've been rewatching early episodes, and when you talk about Dean's control issue when it comes to Sam, it's interesting to see that in season 1 Dean was actually learning to let Sam do his own thing... Too bad all this character development has since then been thrown to the window. :/

Anyway, I hope you find joy in your fandom future! :)

Hi there! *waves* It's been quiet at your journal as well lately! I gathered that you stopped watching, too. I guess we are not the only ones. :(

Oh, yeah. It's kinda ironic, really. I mean, the moment in S1 that made me fall in love with the brotherly relationship (and Dean in particular) was the phone conversation between Sam and Dean, where Dean tells his little brother that he is proud of him for always going after what he wants - even if that includes leaving him. So it makes a sad kind of sense that the moment I felt that Dean stopped treating his little brother like an actual person, i.e. like someone who has the right to make his own choices, was the moment I fell out of love with the brotherly relationship, and therefore the show ( ... )

I can't quite stop wrestling with the show myself, and I think what's going on is interesting in a super-dark way (though like you I am both convinced that they are planning for it to be ultimately constructive and afraid that they will fail spectacularly at making it anything but destructive), but my relationship with SPN certainly isn't what I would call fun these days, and I can't blame anyone for bailing and may yet end up bailing myself. I'll certainly miss your reviews, which were always thoughtful and interesting, and I'd be happy to see you around if you end up finding something else you want to post about here.

I guess, I feel the writers no longer deserve any kind of trust/good-will/faith from us. If I still had any hope that the convoluted, inconsistent and repetitive narrative of the past two seasons would lead anywhere constructive, I would probably have tried to hold on, but I no longer think that. By now, I think that the majority of the SPN writers are incompetent hacks, and I regret that they hold two of my favourite fictional characters hostage. I can do 'dark', but in SPN's case I feel the energy is wasted nowadays. I just hope that people like you or Ash, who are still invested, will be rewarded for their perseverance. :)

And thank you! I am glad you enjoyed my reviews. I certainly loved discussing the show with you and seeing your own thoughts about it. You write exceptional meta about the show.

It's really sad how SPN has turned out now--I know a lot of people say it should have ended with season 5, which I always disagreed with since I do love s6 on the whole and bits of s7, but these days I almost would sacrifice those for the sake of the note of finality we got with 5x22 (minus the Sam glimpse at the very end). I still watch, because I can't quit shows I was once really invested in (I even slogged through the godawful final season of Merlin recently, months later, for closure). It's a chore to watch though--one I only watch while doing chores these days.

On another note, what did you think of the Outlander midseason finale? This is kind of how I felt:

Yeah, I wouldn't want to miss S6/7 either, because I really loved them and think they have a lot to offer in terms of character exploration, but ultimately I just wanted to be able to remember SPN with affection and look back to it as one of my all-time favourite great shows. Now it rather steps in line with Angel, which also disappointed me to such a degree that I could no longer watch it. I hate when watching a show becomes a chore and in the end I think it makes things even worse. By dropping it at this point, I hope I can at least salvage my love for S1-7. Time will tell I guess.

On another note, what did you think of the Outlander midseason finale?Well, of course it was hard to top the wedding episode, which was so intensely focussed on the characters and infused with so much intimacy and atmosphere, but still, I think the finale was great. I loved that we finally got a glimpse into Frank's storyline and those scenes up at the stones, with Claire and Frank 'piercing the veil of time', so to speak, gave me the chills. Of course ( ... )
