My discovery process went like this...

Desire for social expansion > MeetUp.com > Guard Up! Family Swordsmanship... in Burlington, MA > Yahoo! Yellow Pages search for martial arts closer by > Tae kwon do schools (largely Korean, very popular in Lowell) > an American Gyo-Ryu school in Lowell > Wikipedia research + Interest in Japan + Interest in ( Read more... )

"If I ever work in the healthcare field, this could be a very useful skill. Sometimes patients are violent, especially in Emergency Departments. Being able to subdue and restrain such a person without causing harm to anyone is a very valuable skill."

You should look into CPI certification- its Non Violent Crisis Prevention and Intervention. IDK if they do it outside of a job setting, but if they do it'd be useful. I work on a locked psychiatric unit and we have to recertify every year, and it has helped so much with the level of acuity I work with.

Thank you; I didn't know about that, but it makes a lot of sense.

My main concern with learning CPI -- other than the time to take the CPI class -- is learning conflicting techniques. Aikido is something that I'm going to stick with for quite some time. It is becoming a part of me. Plus, it's a great way to get exercise.
