First of all, to those who are being affected by the fires in SoCal, my prayers go out to you. I wish to do more, I want to do more but ... Distance and time still can't be circumvented

Nice LJ layout. I freaked out a bit and almost thought I had landed on the LJ of rar_cho, who is the character I play in the newly opened road_ahead :)
Lots of stuff to chew on here, Gil. I agree there were seeds of greatness in the HP series, but a lot of them fell by the wayside and were wasted for various reasons that even J.K. Rowling probably doesn't understand. Harry, for example, never seemed to have the moral struggle in the last two books that I had expected a Hero to have. I especially think JKR wasted all the alchemy by having Harry NOT recognize that the girl who had been with him all along was the one he belonged with. *sigh* Oh well. The best thing about HP, IMO, is all the wonderful friends I've made:)

OMG!
But that, once again, validates my belief in the saying, "Great minds think alike."
I humbly bow to your superior and greater mind.
I have to agree with your point that Harry never seemed to have "the moral struggle in the last two books that I had expected a Hero to have ...
IMO, Harry seemed to be in a 'rush' to just get things over and done with - no need for deep thinking, moral struggles or what not (Oh, he did have some issues when Ron left them and Hermione was devastated, but that had nothing to do with his primary mission).
It was a "let's get the job done so we can get on with our lives" mentality and attitude.
Which, to my mind, is a reflection of Rowling's own feelings and emotions - let's get the job done so I can move on.
I think you're onto something here, though I'm not sure I agree completely. At first I was pleased by JKR's announcement for the fangirl reason that I started shipping DD/GW in DH but I do think that there are problems, I'm just not sure if I agree with them.
I don't really have a problem personally with Dumbledore being gay or otherwise. I don't think it has anything to do with his decisions or his life or his morality, but I can see how it can be used in this way. To me, the announcement is nice because it confirms one of my ships as canon! (Which hasn't happened before. :( ) The one thing I do have a problem with is that yet again, the big, defining issue in a character's life is brought down to it being due to love in some shape or form. Very much like the Snape revelation. Love is surely important but it seems a bit of a JKR cliché. "Everything can be explained by being in love." Hmm

OF COURSE, I remember you! How can I forget one of my idols during my obsessed, obsessive fandom days?
And, after a good night's sleep ;) and reading your comment, I think I have another piece in this 'complicated' thingy to add.
I think the problem I have with this is not so much Dumbledore's sexuality but in how it was revealed - timing wise, especially. The character has been dead for two years, people (in the book) have been talking trash about him when he is no longer around to defend himself (against charges or innuendoes about homosexuality or paedophilia) which has gotten many all riled up ... and then the 'Creator' confirms the truth of the "dirty" rumours.
What gets my goat are all the paeans of praise about how wonderful Rowling is to have revealed this (in a way, after the fact) ... when it would have gotten much more impact if it had been revealed before the man died

Dumbledore's sexuality isn't relevant to the plot so any mention JKR could have made of it could make her liable to be attacked for including a token gay character, or drawing attention to gay rights in an unsubtle way. Perhaps she could have carried it off
