(My apologies to those of you on my flist who have no idea what I'm on about! Entries marked English Class are far from required reading for you all ;P)
Today, we have fifteen minutes to write in class about one of the...oddest political cartoons I have ever seen. It depicts a character clearly labelled "Osama", as in Osama bin Laden speaking to a comrad who is reading a letter with the caption "The bad news is that Operation: Anaconda devistated our forces. The good news is that the American INS approved your Visa"
If you know me, you know I'm not sure about political cartoons in general. Yes, brevity is the soul of wit, but is political lampooning the vestiges of the weak minded pontificators who merely think they're funny? The Bill Mahers of the world versus the Tina Feys and Simon Peggs of the world? Yeah, okay, I get it -- both Fey and Pegg have been known to dabble in political humour, but unlike the artist behind this cartoon and others, such as the aforementioned Maher, they can find humour in other things. Fey is known for her weekly sitcom 30 Rock, Pegg for his films such as Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz -- none of which have an overt political agenda. In other words? Political cartoons, even this one, make me think "Eh, grow up" to the artist.
