The doorbell rang and Piper sighed drying her hands off on the towel and dragging a hand through her hair making sure the ponytail was doing its job and holding it all up. She made her way to door not feeling guilty about the pile of dishes in the sink or the dirty laundry piling up by the washer.
Day after day it was getting harder and harder to keep up with all the little chores around the house when she also had to keep P3 running and make sure Wyatt and Chris made it to preschool.
With Phoebe and Paige gone the house had become emptier, even Billie had moved out to get a small apartment of her own, needing to spread her wings after Christies death.
There were too many painful memories in the Manor, of her family, of Leo.
Leo had been dead for over a year now and still it was hard for Piper to face. His death had been the fire behind their final battle with Billie and her sister, his death had been the last straw for Piper.
She would save innocents when they needed it but she wouldn’t obey the Elders anymore, she would leave the big battles to the next generation. Her little boys who would one day take up the Halliwell mantle and renew the fight with the Underworld.
Until then she would stay in semi-retirement, protecting her children and watching her sisters juggle their magical and normal lives with their families.
She opened the door, tired, and her eyes widened at who she saw on her doorstep.
“Dean.” She breathed out softly taking in the sight of the man she hadn’t seen in nearly three years. The passage of time showed just as much in her eyes as it did in his, sadness, loss, exhaustion.
“Hey Piper,” Dean smirked the gesture so familiar its warmth settling over her un thawing some frozen part of her heart “I was in the neighborhood and decided to look up an old friend.”
Their relationship had ended abruptly when Leo had come back and they had conceived Chris on the Astral Plains. There had been no hard feelings, no shouts of betrayal, he had understood her love for Leo and he had respected it. That and he had wanted her sons to have their father, th know and love their father.
He had been a good man, and he had left. She hadn’t heard from him since.
“Come in.” she moved aside and Dean entered her home eyes moving over the old surroundings taking in the new pictures. His gaze lingered on a recent picture of Wyatt and Chris before he turned to her smiling sadly “I heard about Leo, I’m sorry.”
“How did you…”
“Phoebe, for some reason she kept in touch. Kept me updated on how you guy’s were doing.”
Piper managed a half smile “Of course she did.” They moved into he living room and she settled in one of the arm chairs leaving Dean to sit on the sofa “So what brings you to San Fransisco.”
Dean coughed ducking his head “We ran into a nasty demon, Sam’s laid up in the hospital for a couple days hopefully getting his share of pretty nurses and sponge baths.” He grinned “So I figured while he was living the high life I would check in on you the boys, see how your holding up.”
Piper smiled thankfully reassuring him with hollow words “We’re fine, I’m fine.”
Dean stared into her eyes intently for a second before begining slowly never breaking contact “You know my dad died a couple of years ago and I swore up and down I was fine but I wasn’t, still not. There are some loses that leave a hole so big inside its hurts every second of every day.” He really hated to borrow some of Sam’s words but Geek Boy had been right. “So how are you really Piper? And none of this fine crap cause we’re both smarter than that babe.”
She wanted to blow him up, wanted to wipe that knowing look from his eyes, wanted to strike back but she couldn’t, because he was right. She stared down at her hands for a second before looking back at him her voice soft.
“Wyatt’s four, turns five soon, and Chris is barely three. They’re so small and they need me, for everything so I have to be fine Dean. For their sake I can’t afford to be anything else so I appreciate you coming I really do but I think you should go now.”
“Bullshit,” Dean snorted and shook his head “and no, I’m staying.” He grimaced “See, the thing is a couple of months back I died, got my soul dragged to Hell and everything from a deal I made with a Crossroads Demon so Sammy is still living and breathing and annoying the crap out of me.” When Piper didn’t say anything, too stunned by his words, he continued. “And Sammy being his annoying self wouldn’t let it stay that way, he got the attention of a lot of the higher ups with his pissy fit and some of them were your Elders. They made a deal with Sam, they find a way to bring me back and he’d stop being such a physic jerk. So he did and here I am.”
Dean grimaced “Seems one of your boys had the bright idea to make me a freaking angel and the only good that comes of it is your boys are my charges, my only charges.” He stared Piper dead in the eyes “So I’m not going anywhere, not for a long while. You’re right, those boys of your need you and I’m gonna make damn sure nobody gets to any of you.”
Piper lowered her eyes letting her breathing return to normal before she stood crossing her arms looking down on him “You done now.” He nodded. “Good,” she sighed “I have a spare bedroom you and Sam can use. Keep your guns in the trunk of your car along with any other dangerous weapons my sons can get into.” She turned to start dinner her heart beating wildly throwing over her shoulder “And stop looking at my ass Dean Winchester.
“Oh c’mon, that’s the best part.” She could hear the laughter in his voice and she sighed as she entered the kitchen looking at the pile of dishes and deciding Dean could do those, along with the laundry, and she needed to call Phoebe and Paige and give them the news. Maybe yell at Phoebe for not telling her she kept in contact with Dean. She felt like she was living again.
There was a small smile on her lips for the first time in a year and it was the image of Dean in robes and a halo that put it there, with wings, Dean Winchester with wings. God, he was going to drive her nuts but Wyatt was going to love having him back, and Chris, they would be safe.
Her boys.
