I keep thinking It's war. What the hell do you expect?
Of course, it's not as if I'm happy about the war or what happens in war. I detest it, I despise it. But, still, shit happens in war. People humiliate prisoners. I'm kinda sick of hearing about it, but it's something we should hear about. It makes war real ... just like seeing the caskets of dead soldiers makes the war real. It's real, it's ugly, and lots of shit happens. And you just hope that the reality of it will keep some future war at bay because these images were so real.
Yeah, don't get me wrong.. I understand this happens.
But we can't NOT be outraged. We can't NOT be furious about it. We can't let ourselves think for a moment it is okay or slightly permissable. It's bad if Saddam did thing. It's WORSE if we do it.
Reminds me of that Chris Rock movie where that politician is going "God Bless America... and no place else!"
Well, it seemed like what most soldiers go through in boot camp by their own men to me. Or what guys might go through when they pledge to a fraternity. This doesn't make it right. I think lots of that stuff is pretty barbaric, but they kinda learn to do that sort of thing, it seems, in boot camp.
It's more than the photos-though those are bad enough. I'm thinking without notes here-so these might not be exact numbers, but around 25 of these detainees have died in custody at various locations in Iraq, and only 14 of the deaths have been explained.
They can't all have "fallen in the shower"....(a favorite reason for detainee deaths given by interrogators in the old South Africa.)
We're supposed to be better than that. I saw Tim Russert on the Daily Show a few nights ago, and he said one thing that his Dad (who fought in WWII) was very proud of was that the U.S. treated their prisoners more humanely than the Germans or Japanese.
And,of course, U.S.'s reputation in the Arab world is even worse than it was before.
And then I saw these pictures and was absolutely disgusted and outraged. Perhaps the rest of the world has already seen this, but I guess I've had my eyes closed.
