In the last week, I've seen four movies. My responses range from 'meh' to 'OMG WOW!' There may be mild spoilers for The Divide and Pacific Rim, but they've been out long enough that I figure it's fair.
The Divide
This one gets the 'meh'. I watched it because it had Milo Ventimiglia in it and from the little bits I'd seen, I thought he suffered, hopefully nobly, and I'd get some hurt/comfort feels out of it. Um ... no. He's kind of a villain. Or at least he becomes one, which was too bad. Also, he shaved off his lovely hair, but it was falling out by then anyway due to radiation poisoning or something (he *does* suffer). It's a long story and not really worth telling. I didn't feel like I wasted my time because Milo, but otherwise ... well, I can see why it had 2 of 5 stars.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
This was awesome. Sheer awesome. I can't believe how many spoilers no one had leaked. I am adoring all the lovely fan theories, no matter how ridiculous. I love the fan art. I love the characters. It's incredible. I wish I could gush more without revealing stuff. But it's definitely, definitely worth seeing.
Hateful Eight
I went to see this because it was a Tarantino flick and I've always liked his stuff. Also, my boyfriend is a photography guy and was all jazzed up about seeing it in 70 mm. Since I'd never seen a film in 70 mm, I wanted the experience. So I got it. My response is along the lines of 'meh' for the 70 mm. I couldn't tell the difference between it and the usual. As for the movie itself, it's wonderfully written, super suspenseful, fabulous acting. There's a lot of gore. Too much for my taste. Too much spewing blood and gross ... seriously gross ... stuff. I may never go to another Tarantino film, that's how bad it was. It's like he took everything I didn't like about his previous movies and mashed them all into this one. There's still lots there to admire and love, but the exploding heads and projectile vomiting of blood put me off.
Pacific Rim
I watched this tonight for fun and just because. I'd heard there was tons of shipping potential in the 'drift-compatible' stuff in the movie, plus I'd seen a 5 minute clip of robots vs monsters a couple weeks ago and was intrigued. This was one of those movies that a lot of fans on my flist/dash were still talking about years after release and still talking about how cool it was. I agree - it's a damn good movie! Very nice. Good stuff. Worth watching. But if you never get around to watching it for yourself, you're really not missing out on anything.
