A/N: Inspired by cacophonylights's story Be My Baby for Kurtbastian week.

It doesn’t come out of nowhere.

But really, does it ever?

-

“When are you two planning on starting a family?”

Kurt speaks before Blaine has a chance to think - “We are perfectly content being the uncles who spoil their nieces and nephews rotten. It’s a dirty job, but someone’s got to do it.”

He chuckles and squeezes Blaine’s hand.

And that’s when Blaine really starts to think. Is he content? Is this the life he’s dreamt of?

Something tells him this isn’t the sort of answer he’s going to find in Kurt’s eyes.
-

“I want to have a baby.”

“And when I was in middle school, I asked my Dad for a pony.”

Kurt laughs, so Blaine does too.

-

There are baby showers and birthdays, and before Blaine knows it, their refrigerator is covered in pictures of smiling faces and toothless grins.

Kurt is planning a three week trip to Paris.

-

Blaine brings it up, and Kurt skillfully evades the topic each time. Sometimes it’s with a kiss and strong hands pinning Blaine to the kitchen counter. He gives Blaine cheeky grin and murmurs we couldn’t do this if we had kids as he sinks to his knees.

Sometimes he just tells Blaine that he’s too tired to discuss it, they’ll talk about it another day.

When they do talk about it, they talk circles around each other.

Kurt loves their life.

And Blaine loves what it could be.

-

“It’s been you and I since we were sixteen. Everything’s perfect. We have everything we’ve ever wanted. Why would we change that?”

“Because we don’t know how much better it could be.”

-

And finally it comes down to a bachelor party. Blaine comes home with sad eyes and a number scrawled on his palm. Purple ink bleeding into his skin. He could rub it raw and forget it happened, but he doesn’t want to.

Kurt guides him to the bedroom and loosens his tie. “Fun night?”

Blaine shakes his head.

“Well, you can tell me about it in the morning.”

He holds out his palm for Kurt to inspect. Seven digits. Seven digits full of promise. “There was a guy.”

“Okay...” Kurt blinks, confused. “So there was a guy.”

“And all I wanted to do was come home to my wonderful boyfriend.”

“And you did.”

“I did, but I keep wondering... what if he wants a kid?”

Kurt’s eyes are fixed at the wall. He’s not scrambling to pull out diversions. No blowjobs, no plans for Paris.

“It’s silly,” Blaine shakes his head. “It’s silly. I should be happy. We have everything.”

Blaine strokes Kurt’s cheek and tries to get him to look at him.

Kurt closes his eyes. “Blaine, if that’s what you want, we’ll start looking for a surrogate tomorrow.”

His words make for a dangerous little spark, and it’s almost enough to ignite a plan. It’s so tempting, Blaine wants to cup it in his palms and never let it go.
But he knows that could get burned.

“Do you want that, Kurt?”

Kurt doesn’t reply at first, Blaine doesn’t let him.

“Don’t lie.”

“No.” Kurt’s cheek is damp under Blaine’s palm. “I don’t.”

“It’s silly,” Blaine repeats. “We have... everything.”

“It’s not silly,” Kurt says quietly. “None of your dreams are silly, you should just... be with someone who shares them too.”

Blaine’s hand drops.

“I...” The words feel thick on his tongue. “I love you. You’re my best friend.”

“I love you, too.”

It doesn’t come out of nowhere, but that doesn’t mean that it hurts any less.
