He nearly sits on it when he shoves into one of the back booths of the Lima Bean, but luckily he looks down and sees it. A small point and shoot camera sits there, obviously forgotten by its owner. It’s silver, and it looks like one of the countless digital cameras Blaine has broken over the years due to his own carelessness.

It’s not like it’s the nicest camera it’s the world, but Blaine knows it holds someone’s memories.

That’s why he feels bad for thinking about the fact that he could use a new camera. No one would know. He would just have to replace the memory card…

And that’s when his fingers get ahead of him and he switches the camera on, selecting the view option.

It’s difficult to tell who the owner of the camera might be, because the photos are full of so many faces. Smiling faces with too many teeth. Dance rehearsals. A small brunette girl twirling. Flowers. A close up for a pair of white docs. A self-taken photo of the same brunette girl and a boy, and Blaine wonders if the girl is the camera owner’s girlfriend. There seems to be enough photos of them present.

But then the next photo clears that up, because the girl is sharing a chaste kiss with a different boy. It’s almost cute, the way she’s high up on her tip toes and he still needs to lean down to make the connection.

The boy shows up again, at the end of the memory card. The photo seems to be taken in front of a full length mirror for the purpose of showing off an outfit. Blaine’s breath catches. He’s slim and strong, and his eyes are bright in a way that is hardly muted by the camera’s questionable quality. His lips are curved into a slight smile.

Blaine has to find him, and not just to give back his camera.

He’s pretty sure that this could be the start of something good.

-

He knows of a website for orphaned cameras, and he’s fond of the heartwarming stories that he finds there.

Obviously the owner of the camera doesn’t know about the site, because three months later, he still hasn’t stepped forward to claim it.

Blaine sighs at he flips through the camera’s contents again. He’s become quite familiar with them by now, but he keeps expecting to find something new. Something that will lead him to the boy with the gorgeous eyes and guarded smile.

He doesn’t even know if he’s gay, and he doesn’t want to assume anything.

There are several pictures of a pretty asian girl and a leggy blonde in various dresses. As he scrolls through, the dresses go from half constructed and held together by pins to the final products. His own creations, perhaps?

Again, not an indication of anything. That isn’t how people work. Sure, they’re made up of little quirks and hobbies, but none of those things make them who they are.

And besides, the series of borderline aggressive looking paintball photos that follow do nothing to clear up anything about the boy.

-

After another week of no word on the identity of the camera’s owner, Blaine takes to Facebook in hopes of tracking him down. He posts the picture of the boy to his newsfeed, the one that had captured Blaine’s interest in the first place.

Hey guys. Does anyone know him? I think I have his camera, and I haven’t been able to locate him to return it! Thanks. :)

The Dalton network works quickly, because within an hour, Blaine has a possible name. Apparently Wes’s little sister might have met him at a show choir competition the previous month, but she’s not sure that it’s him.

Thankfully, she is able to produce a name. Kurt Hummel.

Blaine tests it by saying it to the quiet of his empty dorm room a few times, finding himself enjoying the way it rolls off his tongue. His fingers hesitate over the keys, nervous for the chapter of his life that might be about to unfold as a result of this encounter.

Maybe a missing camera could be the start of something major in his life.

-

As it turns out, Kurt Hummel has no internet footprint besides a heavily locked down Facebook page. The default picture is one of those artsy ones of his shadows, and Blaine is starting to think that what was once a possibly life changer might just be some pretentious douchebag.

Regardless, he throws his hopes into the void and sends him a message.

Hey, Kurt. Sorry if this is totally weird, but I think I might have your camera.

His reply is quick, luckily. Blaine has been about three seconds from over-analyzing every single word of his message and banging his head against his desk. Oh my god! Seriously? I can’t even remember where I left it. That must sound terrible, right? I’m not normally this careless with my things. I must sound like a crazy person. While we’re on the topic - can we meet up?

Blaine shoves pretentious douchebag Facebook photos to the back of his mind and accepts his invitation. Because he’s still hopeful like that.

-

When he enters the Lima Bean, he recognizes Kurt immediately. He’s sitting in the corner booth that Blaine remembers finding the camera at initially. It’s a silly thing to remember, but he does. He’s stirring his drink idly.

He’s wearing fingerless gloves, and more importantly - he’s pulling them off.

Blaine is too busy mimicking a fish out of water, so luckily Kurt is the first to greet him. “Blaine! Hi!” He stands up from his chair and flaps his arms awkwardly, like he isn’t sure if he should go in for the hug. Not knowing what to do, Blaine pulls the camera out of his coat pocket.

And that’s when Kurt hugs him. The camera, and Blaine’s hand, are sandwiched between them. It’s not one of the better hugs Blaine has experienced, but somehow it’s still his favorite.

When they part, they’re both fumbling for words.

Blaine breaks the silence. “Kurt Hummel, paintball warrior and aspiring designer.” His eyes widen. “Oh god, I sound like such a creep.” He thrusts the camera into Kurt’s hands. “Just... take it.”

Kurt blinks at him. “I thought maybe we could have coffee?” He looks hurt. “Unless you didn’t want to.” Those eyes, the same ones that he was drawn to in the photo, are incredibly hard to say no to in person.

“Really?” Blaine asks. “You want to? With me?”

“Well, you seem to know an awful lot about me,” he’s smiles. “I think it’s a shame that I can’t say the same.”

Blaine returns the smile and takes the seat opposite Kurt.

Sure, the sky doesn’t part and the angels don’t speak. Meeting Kurt, upon his initial observation, isn’t life changing.

But he can tell that it’s definitely a good thing.
