manga: setting analysis!

Mar 31, 2011 21:19

I love looking at settings! They tell us a lot about what the characters grew up like, what their interests are, and even relationships between characters. So i figured I'd do it with di[e]ce, specially between Haruki and Kazuki to contrast their setting (with some additional Bishop action).

Warning: Post image heavy. Also spoilersish!

Let's start with Kazuki's house! it is a fairly higher middle class Japanese neighbourhood.

Also fairly standard! It is on the bigger side though, and even has a garden area, thus how you can tell it's upper middle class.

Nonetheless, the inside is still made to spare as much room as possible, as seen with these stairs. Interesting to note that this event must've occurred at Kazuki's house though.

There's a lot of Japanese architecture around as well, as seen above. Tatami room! Well maintained Shinto shrine! Which I think confirms Kazuki has close dead relatives (even before his Grandma died.) Also note the futons within the closet.

Kitchen is also very compact, another traditional Japanese home design feature.

Kazuki's room! Very typical teenage boy that's too interested in games and comics! Messy! Personal touches such as stickers on his old desk! etcetc. In a surprise move though, Kazuki is also the kind of boy that keeps a ~secret hidden hole~ full of the most sentimental of stuff.

Next up! Haruki's home.

God he is rich. Rich rich rich McRich. VERY Western-style, and very spacious, in contrast to Kazuki's home. I think this also means Haruki's parents may NOT be dead, like Kazuki's(?), especially as he has a holiday home with his grandmother. it's more than likely he just has strict, absent parents.

Haruki's bedroom... No where near as cluttered as Kazuki's, everything is in PERFECT ORDER. Also note the TV underneath the desk. Guess who is the one which probably uses it the most. It's interesting though that Haruki, who's never really been interested in games, DOES have a game console set up for Kazuki though. And as we see them at each others houses fairly often as they grow up, it's obvious both families get along pretty well despite the obvious monetary gap from 'FILTHY RICH' and 'Doing well'.

Nonetheless, both seem to be fairly spoiled in different ways? CHECK OUT HARUKI'S BOOKSHELVES AND PERSONAL TV! CHECK OUT HOW MANY COMICS AND GAMES KAZUKI AMASSED! Also the PS2 in his bedroom, which also implies a personal TV. At 15. That stuff ain't cheap! Haruki's parents are much more likely to be able to afford it than Kazuki's Grandmother too, so ultimately I think Kazuki's the most spoiled considering that his Grandmother probably spends so much out of her family's pay range for him. While Haruki's is just... '/throws money at for a substitute for love, eh.'

(This is where I headcanon the fact that while they had loving families, it is pretttty obvious it wasn't enough considering how close the two got attached to each other. Kazuki probably because of missing/dead parents, and Haruki because of professional absent parents?)

BONUS ROUND:

CRACKS IN THE WALLS! FACTORY! SEALED BOXES! BOARDED UP DOORWAYS!
There is no way anyone can tell me this is now where Gara lives on a regular basis, it looks too well lived in to have just been set up, what with the books and the plant, etc. I also notice the plant is wilting and the rubbish lying around. FOR SHAME.

Also note Haruki gets a huge bed all to his lonesome.
