It would seem the mainstream media is fooling us. Based on the link below, the transparent aluminum is only briefly transparent to x-rays.

I don't see a edit function for my previous post, so I will recant here. The picture noted by jonaht appears to be a picture of Aluminium Oxynitride, which made its first appearance many years ago (follow the patent trail of 4520116 if your curious).
