- The Green Mile - Stephen King - 3.5/5 - dragged on, but kept my interest while I was reading
- The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon - Stephen King - 4/5 - interesting premise, ending destroyed it
- The Crucible - Arthur Miller - 27/5 - perfection in every way
- The Shining - Stephen King - 5/5 - scary and disturbing, a solid horror novel
- Wide Sargasso Sea - Jean Rhys - 3/5 - interesting premise, but confusing writing style
- Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children - Ransom Riggs - 4.5/5 - intriguing plot, mediocre ending
- Night - Elie Wiesel - 2/5 - melodramatic, thoroughly unlikable protagonist
- The Casual Vacancy - JK Rowling - 5/5 - complex politics, absolutely heartrending
- The Solitary House - Lynn Shepherd - 5/5 - checks all items on list of qualities in a perfect Victorian-set novel
- Mr Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore - Robin Sloan 4.5/5 - thoroughly enjoyable story, likeable if not interesting characters
- Avalanche Dance - Ellen Schwartz - 2/5 - Gwen was whiny and uninteresting; I liked Molly though.
- Res Judicata - Vicki Grant - 3.5/5 - entertaining and lighthearted
- A Matter of Roses - David Manuel - 3/5 - Mac distractingly resembles Christian Grey; ending could have been stronger
- Almost Eden - Anita Horrocks - 4/5 - heartwarming, but religious overtones were a bit much.
- The Case of the Man Who Died Laughing - Tarquin Hall - 4.5/5 - clever mystery, with lots of details about India and magicians.
- The Witches of Eastwick - John Updike - 1/5 - the most creatively sexist thing I've ever read
- We Need to Talk About Kevin - Lionel Shriver - 3.5/5 - interesting ideas but alienating format
- Lost Girls - Alan Moore and Melinda Gebbie - 4/5 - porn with literary allusions - what could be better?
- Sybil - Flora Rheta Schreiber - 4/5 - obviously questionable accuracy, but compelling story of psychoanalysis
- Dropped Dead Stitch - Maggie Sefton - 2.5/5 - not a terribly clever mystery, a lot of pointless scenes.
- Carrie - Stephen King - 4/5 - my favourite of the Stephen King books I've read
- Pirate Dave and his Randy Adventures - 3/5 - a fascinating trainwreck of a novella, though too obviously trolling to be really fun.
- Sybil Exposed - 4/5 - definitely glad to have read it as a counterpoint to Sybil
- Darkly Dreaming Dexter - 4/5 - one of the best climactic scenes I've ever read.
- Cookie - 3/5 - a real tear-jerker
- The Story of Tracy Beaker - 3.5/5 - touching, but also lots of fun; remind me to read the other Tracy books!
- Flowers in the Attic - 2/5 - never again will I fear that I put my characters through too much turmoil.
- Towelhead - 4/5 - a very honest but very different-from-the-norm portrayal of teenage sexuality
- The Dare Game - 4/5 - even better than TSoTB; much more satisfying!
- Bad Girls - 2/5 - I like Arthur a lot, but not much else
