Testing the panic response; a job interview.

When Bruce had seen the ad in the paper, after weeks of carefully searching both online and in person, his first thought was that he could eat real food again next week. Definitely something to look forward to. But even better than that was the prospect of employment he didn't have to worry about, where suspicions were unlikely. He would have to ( Read more... )

Will glanced briefly at the dirty mirror in the bathroom as he washed his hands with cold water. The thick, raised scar that trailed from his upper cheek to his lower jaw had pinked with age by now. It had been a slow and agonizing four months since the day that Francis Dolarhyde had taken his revenge. Although Will hardly noticed his scar anymore, the riptide of effects that the attack had taken on his life would resound with him forever ( ... )

Bruce didn't move, only stared at him. To most people the face-consuming scar on Will's face would likely be horrific and fascinating, but to him it was a mere afterthought. The eyes, the arch of his nose, the stubble on his jaw... it was just the same as himImmediately, he thought the worst. The military had somehow obtained a blood sample during their last altercation, and instead of distilling it or, perhaps unable to do so, had used advanced cloning techniques to home grow their own Bruce Banner. In no way would he put it past them. He thought of Betty, now again in unimaginable danger and he and it nowhere near to protect her - because what if there were more of these... men-soldiers? - when he heard a beeping, faint but rhythmic, growing more urgent ( ... )

After recognizing the thought process flashing across Bruce's face, Will slowly withdrew his hand without mental incident. It had been a while since someone had looked at him and their first impression had been about every part of his face but the healed laceration on his cheek ( ... )

Bruce was already sure of all that. If, as he expected, Graham was in fact a home grown clone, they were far from the same person except on a genetic level, and his growth must've been obscenely accelerated to account for his age and intelligence level, as well as apparent autonomy, at this point in time. Or had this project been in production for years longer than he'd initially supposed? There was no way to tell. Was he making a wild assumption, and he had a secret identical twin that had been adopted out of the family? It would be far from prudent to show his hand before they'd even placed their bets ( ... )

Will had never encountered someone quite like this before. The closest he could match Bruce's personality to were his infrequent encounters with Dr.Bloom. Regardless, his suspicions were pricked for suspect behavior - it was the first time he'd searched a person like this for easily a half year since the conclusion of his case.

He already felt on-edge.

"I have some idea, but I'm not sure."

Will never had been. There was a point where you just tended to...accept the Nexus, after a while. He'd never let his guard down within it, but his leniency for odd events had been stretched significantly.

The waitress left shortly after taking Bruce's order - Will had already placed his beforehand.
