Rough draft of publishable novel: completed at 45 000 words (which I think is a viable length for a short novel, yes?)
Now I just have to make the draft... not rough. (also, you know, find a publisher who will take really bleak Canadiana set circa 1900 from a first-time author)
GO ME :D

The word length sort of depends on what genre your book is - 45k is more what I'd call a novella than a novel. If it's literary fiction, you might get away with it (I'm thinking, eg, of ON CHESIL BEACH by Ian McEwan - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/9609841/Ian-McEwan-is-lucky-to-be-allowed-to-publish-novellas.html). Smaller, independent publishers may be more open to a shorter novel than the big four. Hope that's helpful and not depressing! ♥

I take comfort in the fact that the revision process is probably going to add some length, seeing as how I sort of skimmed over some bits... and I figured I'd aim for a smaller Canadian publishing company (since the story is technically Canadiana), rather than one of the major houses.
