From a conversation with the Chief Justice of Kiribati, a small Pacific Island nation on the Barristers uniform:

Erica Vowles: So to put it in context, how much does a barrister's wig cost and what percentage of a barrister's yearly wage does that represent?

I get so used to thinking of lawyers of all kinds being wealthy and able to afford all the wigs they could carry, but I suppose that isn't universal.

I love the line: "There's no problem about gowns, everybody's got gowns, there are plenty of gowns". I imagine them sorting through piles and piles of gowns trying to find just one wig!

Lawyers are expected to buy their robes and wigs themselves. Quite a number of legal aid centers share one or two sets of court uniforms. In fact in the same article they interviewed the former head of legal aid Tasmania who had an almost identical story to Robin Millhouse except they asked for a 10 minute adjournment to exchange robes outside the courtroom.

I see no benefit in looking like justices did 200 years ago. Wigs are faintly ridiculous.
