[Background]
Prior to the start of the game, Beat had a shaky relationship with his parents. They were always comparing him to his younger sister Rhyme and made him feel inferior and inadequate. Having had enough of his parents' sermons, Beat ran away from home. Rhyme had followed him out, hoping that she could bring him back home. Sometime during the chase, a car almost hits Rhyme. Beat threw himself at the car, hoping to save his sister. Unfortunately, the car still collided with the two of them and they both died.
Their death made them part of the Reaper's Game. Beat's entry fee was Rhyme's memories of him. When they both awoke as part of the game, Rhyme no longer recalled Beat as her brother. Instead she regarded him as a kind stranger who was willing to help her and become her partner in the game. This broke his heart but despite that he put up a brave face to help her out.
On the second day of the first week, Beat accuses Neku and Shiki that they're one of the Reapers because he couldn't scan them and because he wanted to get payback for Uzuki (a Reaper) turning a bunch of Noise at them. They eventually work it out and Beat suggests that the four of them team up. Neku denies them and Beat and Rhyme head elsewhere.
The two are able to make Neku change his mind when they defeat the Boss on the third day. They began working together the next day. Beat challenged Neku on a foot race to Towa Records. Not realizing it was a trap, Rhyme pushed Beat out of the way from being erased by a Shark Noise. Mr. Hanekoma appears to help Beat out because he too would soon be erased without a partner. Hanekoma took Rhyme's data and made into a pin and gave it to Beat.
While at Beat couldn't help but blame himself for the loss of Rhyme, regretting his actions. If he hadn't been so wreckless, Rhyme wouldn't have been erased but after having done nothing for two days, he runs away from the Wildkat to confront the Reapers. He questioned why he could not use the pin. On the last day, he, Shiki and Neku are confronted by Megumi and is asked what they wished to do now that they won the game. Beat chooses to become a Reaper, in hopes that he will be able to use the pin that way and somehow get Rhyme back.
On the second week of the game, Beat is ordered to take care of Neku and Joshua's team. He confronts them time and time again but is not able to accomplish what he is tasked to do. During this time, he learns more about the Reaper's Game.
On the third week, he defects from the Reapers and joins Neku as his partner believing that it wasn't fair that Neku was made to play the Game without a partner. Because he was not able to gain any points during his week as a Reaper, he was told that he had less than seven days until he was erased himself. His entrance fee for this game was the Noise, which happened to be Rhyme in Noise form, that sat on his shoulder during his time as a Reaper.
The only mission of the week was to find Konishi by the last day. Neku and Beat (mostly Beat) scrapped the plan and decide to find Shibuya River to face the Composer. Beat said that he wanted to defeat the Composer and become the Composer himself so that he could get Rhyme back saying that she deserves a second chance. They continue to do this for the rest of the week without much avail. They begin noticing on the fifth day that everyone in Shibuya are thinking and saying the exact same thing. On the last day, just as Beat begins fading away, they find Konishi hiding in Beat's shadow. They defeat her and Beat gets Rhyme once more.
The two of them meet Shiki again and find the Conductor together with her. Beat protects Neku from one of Megumi's attacks and is left unconscious. He wakes up in time to help Neku fight the conductor one last time. As the game ends, Beat wishes that Rhyme be returned to her human form.
He is later seen with his sister, waiting to meet up with Neku at the end of the game.
[Personality]
Prior to landing both himself and Rhyme in the Game, Beat was apathetic and usually hid behind nonchalance about life in general especially around his parents. He did not like and still does not like being pitied, thus wanting to get away from both his parents and Rhyme when he had that argument before the accident. Because the situation had changed from RG and UG, Beat knew that he had to step up his game and act the part of big brother for Rhyme if he wanted to get the two of them out of it. He would much rather be the only being relied on although he may be a little harsh on himself whenever he falls short of that role.
One of the first impressions one might get from someone like Beat is that he comes off as a tough guy. He looks the part, talks the part and acts the part. While all that is true, it's only the exterior of the boy that seems that way. He is actually quite the softie who truly cares and worries over the well-being of his sister and his friends even if it means him getting hurt in process. In this sense, he is dependable despite the recklessness that he exhibits and would go out on a limb for his cause, whatever it may be. This trait is shown when he sticks his neck out and loses his right to remain a Reaper when Uzuki and Kariya inform Neku that he's was a lone Player during that week of the Game.
More often than not, Beat acts before he thinks, not considering the repercussions of what he says or does. He's brash and would rather reach conclusions through his actions than through words. When he does speak, he's not one to go beat around the bush and mince words, allowing him to speak his mind without much hinderance from others. At times this works to his advantages, but this has proven to backfire as well. Not that he cares all too much what others think about what he says or does. He's no stickler for the rules.
In no way is he the sharpest tool in the shed. Because of his affinity to rush into things before carefully considering the outcome he likes to jump the gun and come up with conclusions that most people wouldn't have even considered in the first place. It may be an exasperating trait but it helps give insight... sometimes. This usually leads him to talking things a little too seriously and gives of the vibe that he is gullible. He does however catch on... eventually, with or without the help of others.
Beat is stubbon as hell. Once he's made up his mind there is little to no chance of talking him out of it. It doesn't help that he's hard-headed too. It may take a while though but as soon as you get through to him though, he will be willing to at least hear people out and accept help when he knows that he needs it.
He talks in slang and this contributes to how people may wrongly perceive him at first glance. He may or may not have picked this up from the other skaters he hands out with but it helps make Beat who he is. It completes the tough skater persona of his. It takes a while to understand what he is saying at times but he somehow gets the message through.
[Specialties/Abilities]
With the use of the Player Pin, Beat is able to hear the thoughts of other people around him through scanning and prevents other Players and to his his own thoughts. It is untested whether this works outside of the Game and UG.
While in UG, Beat is also able to attack Noise and Reapers with his skateboard through a pin called Respect. He can also do fusion attacks with Neku to take fwon enemies faster. By activating the pin, they could do any of the following: Teleport around the screen to cause damage, ride along the chains while accelerating until the fusion runs out, or wiping out the enemies by riding a huge wave.
It is also hinted that Beat is a decent, if not pretty good, skateboarder.
[Affection]
Beat will probably get really flustered if a girl tries to make a move on him. Or get really confused.
[Fighting]
Beat could probably tussle a bit. The outcome will depend on who he takes on.
[Other Facts]
Beat thinks that his first name is rather embarrassing and would freak whenever someone called him by that.
It is suggested that he is a decent skateboarder.
He really, really, really likes curry.
