"Two Very Moving Thumbs Up" -Siskel and Ebert

So I have this theory about Mel’s new movie, “Passion of Christ”... It’s going to be like Eminem. Seriously. Either you love him, or you love to hate him, but either way, he’s making money off of you because you just can’t look away. This is the same thing. Where as most movies nail one demographic, this one is going to nail two. 1) The Christians ( Read more... )

Hey gank, i sometimes listen to Damn Disease as well... is a new cd coming out soon?
The Passion of The Christ is in theaters soon - this week on Wednesday.. what do you think about this movie? I'm going to see it for sure - the trailers were enough to convince me. I read somewhere that it's the widest opening ever for a subtitled movie; I have a feeling subtitles won't detract from the full effect of this movie though. After looking at the trailers which have no subtitles or english at all, it was reinforced for me that lack of spoken english in this film won't hurt one bit. To sum up my impression of The Passion: it's a work of art.

Another fascinating aspect to this movie is all the controversy that has been generated about it.
Some people, not really representative of Jewish people, but rather self appointed Jewish spokespeople, such as Abraham Foxman from the Anti-Defamation League, seem to have been attempting to denounce this film for months as being anti-Semitic. The news reported that they even stole the ( ... )

i don't understand the controversy of the whole antisemitic angle. any christian who knows anything about his or her religion will tell you that Christ was supposed to die, so it's not like christians are supposed to get pissed about who brought about the execution. beyond that, the Bible says that Christ died for everyone, so most christians think that we're all equally to blame for His death, and that's okay, since He was okay with it. It's the way things were supposed to be. it's not antisemitic to say the Jewish people of the time catalysed His death... it's just what people think happened--not a bad thing.

i'm not going to see it just because last time i went to see a movie with subtitles in knoxville (brotherhood of the wolves--rocked), the dumbass rednecks in the theatres all sat around bitching about the fact that they had to read. i think my favorite was "if i wanted to read i'd go to the library. why can't those people speak english?"

I killed Jesus, get over it.
As for this "let's pay money to sit in a theatre - with it's 15 minutes, of commercials, 15 minutes of horseshit previews, baby momma's momma on her god damned cell phone, and fanboy fucktards (not to mention the super shitty ass flick you paid to see)", I say fuck that.

I've already seen this flick, and besides the gore, and the half translated subtitles, I say it was pretty damn interesting.

The controversy that this movie brings up is going to be the same reduntant shit that's been discussed for years. When it comes down to it, the Bible is the most controversial piece of literature we have. It's not antisemitic (the Jews, after all, are God's chosen people in this book they love to hate- particularly the gosples), it's just what it is- a book that professes the belief structure of an organized religion. People look too deep to find the things they don't like about it and make controversy and propaganda of that. "Look, but don't touch. Touch, but don't taste. Taste, but don't swallow." The real controversy comes from the inner conflict of instinct and moral. The Christian religion denounces and is against all other religions (very litterally speaking). All other religions denounce and are against Christianity (very generally speaking). It's kind of an "us" against "them" thing. So when this movie gets its much talked about controversial buzz, people are going to sit down and reitterate the opinions they've been dwelling ( ... )
