You mean take on certain characters specifically to force yourself to learn to write something you're not confident writing about? Or am I misreading?

You're not misreading: that's what I do. I took on Leah because I wanted to write a person with an actual real disability. Part of what appealed to me about playing Renee is her history as a second generation immigrant pushes me out of my comfort zone. I take on characters that I can't already write in order to teach myself to write them.
