The biggest problem for me is that you don't run it in a compiler, you just write your code and then upload it to your web server and hope it runs ok in your browser. Sometimes if theres a big problem you'll get an error message but you don't have anywhere near the set of debugging tools you would have when coding in like C or VB or something along those lines. And sometimes the problems are very subtle and the browser gives you no clue whats going on.
Just seems like it takes me 3 or 4 times as long to write/test/debug code in PHP than it does in other languages.
I think I'm going to buy more Ruby on Rails books. I've got one and it piqued my interest enough to warrant further exploration.
