I've been thinking about taking this to Blogger; I like the setup there a lot better, but more than that, I'd like a fresh start. My history with online journaling goes like this: when I was 16 I got a Xanga because one of my good friends had one and I wanted to comment on her page. That lasted for a few years, until around my freshman year of ( Read more... )

My life, for some reason, is strongly guided by phases and seasons

I really feel this way too although sometimes my seasons overlap, and I tend to think of them as chapters. I think you are right about the significance of marking those transitions with tangible things, like what you describe about your hair, whether you are doing it intentionally in a planned way or on the spur of the moment. Actually, I think in our culture we would benefit if more people had this perspective and took the time to reflect on their past and find closure as the seasons pass.

That is also very interesting about how those various big names in the GR area said that the people who give most are those who put their time and elbow grease in without any recognition, rather than the ones who simply write the largest check.

A friend of mine used to work for the Van Andel family in the summer and he got to know the patriarch of the family, Jay Van Andel pretty well (as far as employee/employer relationships go). Anyhoo, he (my friend) and his family were out on vacation way away from home and his appendix burst which, y'know can kill you. The father called Van Andel, and was like "HELP" because they were not really anywhere near a hospital. Jay Van Andel sent out his own private jet to pick him up and rush him into the nearest city because he knew it would be faster than aero-med. Apparently he was an incredibly generous person.
