Ooo, this is really interesting! Good to know that WMECO has a lower than average carbon footprint, even if they use more from nuclear plants (presumably Seabrook and the plant near Brattleboro) than average.

One thing that helped lower my useage by about 25%: an EnergyStar refrigerator. It's *really* making a difference this December!

I need to look at my calendar and figure out which month I got *my* new Energy Star fridge. Thanks for the reminder! My old one cycled almost all the time - it was a 1992 that had been moved cross-country several times, the poor old thing.

That is interesting. I will have to see if I can track past bills online.

I did go to the EPA website and my region's mix is mostly natural gas, then hydo and nuclear after that. I would like to see us go more hydro and solar. I would love to be able to run my house on solar, but the upstart cost is just too expensive.

I have heard of household with solar that are actually selling their excess engery back to power other households.

If for nothing more, reducing bills is good. :)

California is a great place to have photovoltaic panels! I have a newspaper article several years old around here somewhere about a developer who put in a subdivision in San Diego with PV panels on all the roofs - Poway, maybe? Around here we can cover about 1/3 of our electrical needs with PV panels, but I'd still LOVE to have a set.

I'd say you're doing pretty well -- noticed that your June usage went down from 2007 to 2008 ( ... )

I use my A/C occasionally, but more often I use my whole-house fan and let it run all night, pulling in cool night air. A/C would be even more. These figures also accommodate my dehumidifiers, which are PIGS, but my basement would turn green with mildew very quickly without them.

Ah, we used to have a basement like that, in Holyoke. Where you are you may not have this particular problem, but at our place we figured out that most of the moisture was coming in from one side (we were on a hill). My folks' home in Northampton, which was on level ground, had a similar problem though, so ( ... )

I have a gas furnace with baseboard hot water heat. Only one outlet has an electric blower, though the furnace does use some electricity. It's not like the house where I grew up, with electric baseboard heating, though.
