Since going to visit family in Portland always means a pilgrimage to Powell's, I have new books. ::does happy dance:: Tragically, I had to exercise heroic self-restraint (epic, even) and only get 4 books. Thanks to my mum tho' one of those was the HC of the latest Felix Castor (well, latest here in the 'states. stupid importing. want more ( Read more... )

Indeed. I'm looking forward to reading them. I heard they are making movies already!

And yeah - not so much on the Iain Banks. Unless you like poor writing and maggots?

The Wasp Factory was, in my honest opinion, my least favourite Iain Banks book, too full of ickyness for me ...

... Espedair Street on the other hand I loved when I read it.

And you *do* know that Iain Banks writes "mainstream" books and "Iain M. Banks" writes science fiction, don't you? Different genres, different styles, same guy.

But you read what you want to, it's your life!

Yeah, I know. and I am not particularly interested in either of his genres. I mostly had problems with the 'poorly written and executed' part, and not the icky part. I don't mind gross stuff - I *do* mind authors trying to get you to ignore the 500lb gorilla in the room, only to act like you should be surprised by the gorilla later on. If you're curious, I totally came up with a rant!pants metaphor for the whole experience. ;)

Yeah, I very easily come up with $100+ on my first pass, and then have to tearfully bid books farewell before checkout. It's a booktopia ::happy sigh::

...and I totally realized I need a book love icon.
