anti-Mendelssohn

I think Mendelssohn must have had a bad experience with a clarinet in his youth. Why else would he write these terrible terrible solos for clarinet? Okay... granted, they're big and exposed... but soooooo evil! He must have liked torturing poor clarinetists whose wrists hurt and who only want to be able to play those two small measures, dammit ( Read more... )

Don't get me wrong, I like his music. But the combination of the Scherzo from a Midsummer Night's Dream and the 2nd movement of the Scottish Symphony make for evil evil evil clarinet excerpts. And I have to play the Scottish Symphony excerpt tomorrow.... >_

That Mendelssohn was a real jerk wasn't he? But it's the people who PICK the excerpts who are truly evil...
