Maybe it is simply that I am a philistine but can anyone explain to me why the various award committees, film critics and acting community in general, have gone crazy over a silent movie some 85 years or so since the introduction of "talkies"?

I really cannot see the appeal but then as I say I may well be a philistine. :)

I haven't seen the movie, but I don't get it either, to be honest.

I'm a philistine, too. Actually went to see it because a friend had heard it was really good. What a snooze fest. About 45 minutes too long and extraordinarily self indulgent, especially since the lead character was so egotistical that I felt no concern or compassion for him. Waste of time and money, though a nice hommage to the era.
