its funny, its not so much the word as a whole that is recognized its the shape of the word. Assenders Decenders in the correct places letter spacing and all that. the most difficult typos to catch are those where similarly sized letters are switched.

I have a book or two on the subject if you are interested :) hmmm typography and the human visual system :)
