I think that maybe, it has to do with the fact that, perhaps, more often than not, it's reality for most people. Fairy tales are called fairy tales for a reason.

Not trying to be a downer or anything, but if all stories ended with a happy ending, I think people would be more unhappy with their lives, expecting happy endings to be the way everything goes all the time.

It's like with everything, there needs to be a balance. Negatives and positives. Black and white. Sad and happy.
