Video ◌ 009 ◌ You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone.

[The feed comes on and there is a slight shuffling sound, but the video is blackness. After a moment you can hear a tiny, sobbing gasp. The video resolves with the little light available, and you can see the dim outline of a bed, and a shape that is perhaps someone curled up under the covers. Kumajirou's soft voice comes from very close to the ( Read more... )

[Obviously something is very wrong, and John is going to stop by Canada's room to see if he can help.

So assuming Holmes or someone let him in, John will be knocking on the door to Canada's room.]

[After a long pause and some scuffling, the door cracks open and Kumajirou lets John in with a nod.

Canada doesn't stir.]

[John gives Kumajirou a nod of thanks, and moves into the room far enough to close the door again.]

Canada? It's John.

[Bleary-eyed and ruddy-faced, Canada peeks out from under the covers at his friend.]

J-John. Sorry- I-I'm sorry. I didn't mean to t-trouble you... [Darnit, Kumajirou.]

It's no trouble. Obviously something's happened. Is there anything I can do...?

I'm s-sorry. I- I don't know... I've n-not felt like this since- since hearing the world might be gone...
And- e-even when I went from staying with France to being with England, at least- a-at least I knew where Papa was--

[Tearing up again he sniffles into his blanket for a moment, then looks at John hopefully.]

D-do people have m-medicine for this?

[John pulls up a chair and takes a seat by the bed. He gives Canada a sympathetic smile.]

That depends on what the problem is. Can you tell me what happened?

[Nodding, he takes a few deep breaths.]

Um- I... was going to m-meet J-Jasmine today. But when I w-went... she- she's not there. She's ...[he glances at where Kumajirou had left his Guide near the foot of the bed] not anywhere.

[After some shuddering breaths and a gulp he continues,]

I was really upset when Shuuichi left too... But th-this-! I- I feel ...sick. [He says it disbelievingly - there is no longer an economy that can crash, so how can he feel so sick?]

I'm so sorry to hear that.

[Well that explains the extreme reaction. John doesn't blame him one bit.]

Unfortunately this isn't something a doctor can fix. I'm sorry, Canada.

It... it isn't? B-but...
[He's silent for a moment, thinking about it. Doctors help people who are sick! But countries can't usually be helped by doctors. And if John says that there is nothing that can be done, then it must be so.]

N-no, th-thank you for being honest. But, you k-know what is the matter with me? [Because he still doesn't really understand.]

Ah, well... [Canada seems so normal, it's easy to forget he's not exactly human.]

What you're feeling is commonly referred to as a broken heart. Not medically accurate of course, but that's certainly what it feels like when you lose someone you care about.

It's okay to feel overwhelming sadness because you miss her. I know it hurts though.

It really does. A broken heart... [He nods slowly, taking it in.]

So... this is what it's like, then? I- I really don't think that the movies or books do it justice...

[John smiles a little sadly.] They usually don't.

The feeling fades a little bit as time goes on, but that doesn't help right now.

[He shakes his head slightly and draws another shuddering breath.]

No... no it doesn't.

And n-nothing but time helps?

[John leans forward and puts his hand on Canada's shoulder for a moment.]

There are drugs that would numb the feelings, or knock you out so you could sleep, but the feelings will still be there when the drugs wear off.

[He sits back in his chair. It's probably obvious that he doesn't consider something like that to be a good idea.]

[Canada flinches slightly at John's touch upon his shoulder, unused to it.
He listens carefully to the doctor's advice, and does indeed pick up that John thinks that the drugs would not be a good idea. Still, he sighs slightly and sinks under the covers a bit more, looking at John nervously.]

Something to help me sleep... I'm sorry, but... if- if I can't sleep tonight, may I call you again tomorrow?
