[On the screen, a Vogon is droning on about arrival paperwork and returning passengers. Suddenly a voice off screen speaks.]

[A hand reaches into view and taps the Vogon on the head, instantly knocking it unconscious. As the Vogon's head hits the desk, the Guide is picked up and a very annoyed Castiel looks into the screen for a minute

It makes sense though, when you consider that people arrive on the ship from different timelines regularly.
I wonder if we're dealing with parallel dimensions and alternate realities here, then. Maybe you were wormholed to the same time your world had been destroyed, but just in a different, parallel reality where everything is the same except the time the planet is destroyed.

I think the widely accepted conclusion is that the Castiel that was in that reality was still you, so you didn't really replace him or anything. You were just snapped back into a reality where you could exist. It may have taken a few months to happen in this time, but in the time of the other reality, it was a split second.
If that makes sense. It's been a while since I've taken that class, and the textbooks did a bad job at explaining the theories.
