[On the screen, a Vogon is droning on about arrival paperwork and returning passengers. Suddenly a voice off screen speaks.]

Enough.

[A hand reaches into view and taps the Vogon on the head, instantly knocking it unconscious. As the Vogon's head hits the desk, the Guide is picked up and a very annoyed Castiel looks into the screen for a minute ( Read more... )

[Cas is back, he didn't get his ass permanently wormholed. Cas is back!]

Starting a civil war in Heaven isn't enough?

[There's amusement in his voice, but as he takes the bottle back he glances away and doesn't quite meet Gin's eyes.]

[What the...? If Gin didn't know better, he'd almost say Cas is being evasive. Now how did he learn that little trick?]

What can I say? I'm demanding. [His voice, to his annoyance, is a little raw. Seriously, he's totally jelly of Castiel's ability to process alcohol.] But seriously, if you don't want to tell me that's fine. It's not like I tell you everything.

[Cas takes another drink while he thinks about how to answer. Part of him wants to tell Gin everything just so he can explain himself again and hopefully justify his actions...but he's not sure what Gin's reaction would be. Not that Gin is a model of conservative angelic behavior by any means...but Dean's rejection is still fresh in his mind.

So he keeps it vague. Again.]

In order to fight that war I had to make some...difficult decisions. My friends... [There's a moment of hesitation over that word.]

... Well, they didn't always approve of my decisions.

[For better of for worse, Gin understands that. Hell, he feels like he had this conversation less than a week ago with Ezio. With a sigh, Gin pulls out a chair and flops into it, sliding a hand into his hair so he can rest his elbow on the table.] Of course you did, you were fighting against an archangel. People who like to toss out words like "right"and "honorable" don't know what it's like to go against impossible odds. They don't understand fighting a losing battle and how desperate you can get. [Here, he shrugs.]

Sometimes, if you want to win you have to play dirty. Those who cling to shit like morales end up dead or are ignorant fucks who don't know what it's like to be weak.[He pauses here because, whoops, that's getting uncomfortable for him.]

Unfortunately, they do understand fighting a losing battle against impossible odds. They've been in that situation far too many times.

[He takes another drink and then sets the bottle on the table as he takes a seat.]

I thought if anyone could understand, it would be Dean. I suppose that was foolishly optimistic of me. Apparently it's somehow different when I'm the one making the decisions.

[And Cas can't quite keep the bitterness from coloring his voice.]

I guess this is where you say he's only human? [The comment is light and slightly mocking but Gin isn't sure what else to say. Comfort and understanding just isn't like him. In this kind of situation, all that's left are barbs and the fact that the world is full of stubborn idiots.]

You did what you had to, Cas. Whether it was right or wrong doesn't really matter.

[That gets a slight smile.] Good point. He is only human.

[The amusement doesn't last long though.] No matter what I did, things just got more and more...complicated.

Welcome to life. [Still, despite his words, he awkwardly reaches forward, giving Castiel a pat before withdrawing his hand quickly like he did something wrong. That complete, he goes for the bottle again to take another choking mouthful. He is much too sober for this conversation.]

[Cas is a little surprised by the gesture, but it's appreciated.

He stares down at his hands for a moment, with his thoughts a million miles away.]

It was almost over. For better or for worse, we only needed a few more days...

[He lets the thought trail off and takes another drink from the bottle. Then he seems to come back to himself and give the bottle a closer look.]

This still tastes vile.

[Shut up, he was really depressed when he thought you'd poofed.]

[After some more coughing, Gin finally speaks again.] You found a way to fight Raphael and his followers to keep them from jump-starting the Apocalypse. This I have to hear.

And yeah, I noticed.

[It's nice to know you care, Gin.]

I didn't so much find a way as have it presented to me on a silver platter, with some very obvious strings attached.

[Cas leaves the bottle on the table and sits back in his chair with a quiet sigh.]

Unfortunately I didn't have much choice. Raphael only gave me a day before I had to submit to his authority or be destroyed.

[Shush.]

There's a demon about to be involved in this story, isn't there? [The remark is made mostly in jest but he knows it's not impossible. Demons have this tendency to show up when you need them the most with deals that are obviously so very shady.]

A whole day? Wow. He must have been in a good mood.

[Gin gets a slight look of surprise for that comment.]

Yes, it was a demon. The new "King of Hell" in fact, since Lucifer was locked away. He was rather...persuasive.

And Raphael has always enjoyed theatrics. [Which is a nice way of saying he's a drama queen.]

... you made a deal with Satan 2.0. [There's a flat tone to Gin's voice to show what he thinks of this. Although, given that he works for Lucifer he can't really talk, but still...]

Of a sort, yes. I don't have a soul to sell, of course. It was more of a mutually beneficial business arrangement.

[Yes, he knows that doesn't really make it any better. He probably sounds a little defensive now.]

I didn't have many options. Crowley offered a straw, and I grasped it.
