Excavating for and salvaging sunken machina. We'd be underwater for days on end, y'know, and most of the time I couldn't make heads or tails of whether it was night or day. Ha ha, or how many even passed in between thinking about it.
"Machina" is just the tag-term for machinery dating back before the new wave of production. So, technically they're machines or machines are technically machina. Whatever way you wanna look at it, I guess. They're just older. Anyway, I work with my old man and his team; we anchor up our ship, dive 'til we hit the floor, and start searching. Sometimes it'll be a short few day trip, sometimes we'll be out for weeks. It all depends on how far down we need to go or if we pick up a trace of anything worth spending the time on. You may be surprised, but it's pretty often we pick a site that requires us to bolt in small, air-contained bases on the actual floor. If that happens, we communicate our findings to the main vessel through our network and they'll send down small fleets to help transport what we've got. Then, whatever we find is either sold as is or fixed up, tweaked, modernized and sold for more. Huge market nowadays... back where I'm from.
[And surprisingly, she did not lose an ounce of wind during that entire low-down
( ... )
[Rikku smiles thoughtfully at that last observation, nodding in reply.] Everyone's got their calling - whether they're born in to it or not - I just do all I can when I need to and make sure to have a good time doing it.
Though, I'm pretty lucky to enjoy the work as much as I do; I don't know what I'd do if I didn't. I'd pro'lly drown myself or something.
[Adds in hastily:] ...Except I didn't really mean that last bit. I wouldn't seriously kill myself. I'd just find something different.
[Responds to that with a small, sympathetic nod. But by the downcast look on her face and the awkward scratching of her arm, it's clear she's holding more back on the matter than she's willing to say.]
[Fortunately enough, Une's question has her intrigued; definitely a welcomed distraction. She knows some about Preventer, but figures it's best to get the basics down straight anyway, just in case some of what she knows isn't right on the money.]
[If you can't see how eager she is, tell me you can hear it.]
Wow - I mean - wow, seriously? That would be the most perfect job ever! That's been one of the major set-backs being here, y'know? Because tinkering around and stuff is fun, but working with machina on a serious level like that? Well, there's really no comparison.
[Claps her hands together, still starry-eyed at the proposal.] Anyway, yeah, I'd totally love to!

I wonder.
Would you possible be interested in working for Preventer?

[which can be handwaved or done in next month's log; up to you 8)]
There's old technology from our world I'm interested in developing here. How are you with holograms?
